How to Write an Address on an Envelope
Most mail is sorted by machines that scan an envelope in a fraction of a second. Putting each part in the expected spot helps your letter arrive on time.
The three zones
- Return address: top left corner.
- Postage stamp: top right corner.
- Delivery address: centered, slightly below the middle of the envelope.
Writing the delivery address
- Recipient name on the first line.
- Street address with any unit on the second line.
- City, state and ZIP code on the last line.
Keep lines left aligned with each other, even though the block itself sits near the center.
Keep the bottom clear
Machines print a barcode along the bottom edge. Leave roughly the lower 5/8 inch empty so the barcode can be applied cleanly.
Handwriting tips
Use dark ink on a light envelope. Print clearly in capital letters, avoid cursive and do not underline the ZIP code.
Printing labels
If you print labels, use a clear sans-serif or typewriter font at 10 to 12 points. Test your label template with long names and addresses that include units, which is exactly where generated addresses help.
Generate realistic US addresses for forms, databases and design mockups, then copy or download them as CSV or JSON.
